Spectro #5 – My backlog suffers.. December 31, 2008

Yes, it’s been a while since I posted.. again. I’ve had quite a few different things to rant about over the last couple of weeks but I’ve never felt like posting. It’s the last day of ‘08 so I might as well post now. Hopefully you’ll see more from me in 2009.

The biggest thing going on in my gaming life right now is me saving up for a DS. I mentioned in an earlier blog that I lost my DS Lite near the beginning of 2008. I don’t know if it’s in my house or someone stole it from me; I’m willing to bet the latter. Anyway, you can check on my backlog to see how many more monies I need until I can buy a new DS. I’m leaning towards a shiny new onyx colored one. ^_-

Thanks to the fine members of the Backloggery, I have plenty of DS game suggestions to start out with.

Well.. I still haven’t dodged 200 lightning bolts in Final Fantasy X. I’ll get it eventually, though. Damn you,  Square!  My friend really wants me to play Disgaea but I haven’t finished Makai Kingdom yet. One strategy-RPG at a time! Speaking of RPGs.. over the past couple of weeks I have bought Persona 4 off of a friend, started it, received Persona 3 FES in the mail, and been convinced to play FES first instead. I’ll be starting FES soon. I can’t wait.

I also need to start Prince of Persia. Yeah, the new one that they didn’t bother giving a subtitle. That pisses me off when they use an old name and pretend the old game didn’t ever exist. I also just got Animal Crossing: City Folk. Hopefully some of you can visit my town sometime.

Here’s my biggest rant of the evening: My sister is a little ungrateful bitch. She’s never liked video games nearly as much as me, but some of them seem to catch her eye. Lately, it’s been Persona 3 and 4. While I’ve spent 0 hours in Persona 3 and 1-2 in Persona 4, she’s spent at least 20 hours in each game so far. But they are my games, so why do I let her do this? I’m nice. The only gaming I’ve done all week so far is about 2 hours on Left 4 Dead versus mode. All the rest of it has been spent at my computer or sleeping extra because I’m nice enough to let my sister have her fun for a while. Here is why I am pissed. After several days almost no gaming, I want to play my new copy of Prince of Persia. Is that too much to ask? Yes, apparently. She thinks she needs to make up the time that I have been gaming my whole entire life.  I don’t care what she says. It’s fucking game time. [/rant]

I hope that made since. I don’t type very well when I’m this flustered and pissed off.

Well, that’s it. I don’t have a whole lot else to say right now. I’ll seeya around.

That’s right, I’m just lazy. And I’m late.. all the time. :( For example, what’s with the new WP dashboard? Jeeeez.

I HAVEN’T POSTED SINCE DECEMBER 1ST, AND IT’S ALREADY DECEMBER 27TH. Har har. Thankfully, I’ve been able to get some gaming into my schedule, which gives me something to rant about. :)

Unfortunately, it’s nothing new. It’s stuff that Reb and Dan have already touched. Those bastards.

Right now, I have the craving to read a really girly shoujo manga. I was reading one, but it hasn’t been updated in forever. :(

Anyways, I recently finished Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. I’ve actually been marathoning that this week, so I could just get it off my shoulders. Despite the bad reception I’ve been seeing, it’s actually quite good. It’s nothing breath taking, but it’s not terrible as most might say. I guess they compare it to its original.

I thought maybe Lloyd would redeem himself (for me) in the sequel, but it just made me hate him more. Talk about a huge change of personality within two years. His stupid friends may rant about how he’s the same, but the way he was presented in the game made him seem like he’s taken a very serious role in society. He’s very serious half the time, and he always knows the right things to say. >_> Screw that, Lloyd will always suck.

Marta was ANNOYING. Regular Emil was ANNOYING. Ratatosk Mode Emil had his annoying moments, but he was overall pretty awesome.

I don’t really have much to say about ToS2, and whatever I’ll be ranting about will be in the A Step into Tales segment. I’ll post that soon enough. Don’t expect a full throtle review, though. Dan already has that covered.

Short post, meh. I’ll just do the video thing.

Miror B. #5 – Father of Death December 26, 2008

Woo, post-Christmas Miror B. time. This song isn’t related to Christmas at all, though. Today’s upload is Father of Death by The Protomen. If you don’t know about The Protomen, shame on you. Their first album (self-titled) was a rock opera that told the story of the Mega Man series. The classic series, I mean. In fact, their first album might be my next Miror B. post.

Father of Death comes from The Protomen’s upcoming second album, II. Rather than try to tack on a fan-made continuation of the plot (or delve into the X series), II serves as a prequel to The Protomen’s first album. It deals largely with the relationship between Dr. Light and Dr. Wily, as well as their shared love interest, a girl named Emily.

Anyway, here you go. More likely than not, I’ll post their first album later.

First of all, it’s December 25th! That means it’s Christmas! So I bid you all a Merry Christmas and I hope this day brings you happiness and joy. My theme this time around… It’s another Tigerfog picture, so full credit go to him. He’s still a kickass artist.

It’s been a while since I talked about anything here on the blog. I’m really too tired right now to actually say something, but I’ll live. As you might recall from my last entry, I was under the possibility that I might be suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Luckily, the pain subsided and my hand is 100% again. I’ve been able to game pretty normally since last week, so yay~

As far as actual gaming goes, lots of music games and not enough Persona 4. This past Sunday, I was helping run a tournament we had planned for a while. A pleasant wintery mix slowed our plans down and we were forced to reschedule the big one, but it didn’t stop us from actually running a mini-tournament that day as well.

Most of yesterday consisted of beating Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA2 (J)’s Hyper Master Mode. At this point in time, I’m only 2% away from getting 100% in the mode needed to access some Prize steps that are hidden within the game. beatmania IIDX has been on and off, switching through several of the games for different songs and such. I really want to progress my game further, but no luck right now on trying to improve where I’m at right now.

I’ll probably make another entry with what I got for Christmas and stuff later in the night.

Entry was way too short… Have a video. It’s not Christmas related either:

Again, have a Merry Christmas, everyone. Later~

Dan #15 – WHAT’RE YA BUYIN’? [Updated Again! Some items removed!] December 23, 2008

Update: Sorry, but I’m afraid I’ve had a change of heart for some of these. Kingdom Hearts II and all three of the DS games I were offering are no longer for sale. If you intended to buy any of these, I apologize. I just got to thinking and I changed my mind on wanting to part with them.

Thought I might as well hop on the For Sale/Trade bandwagon. Feel free to haggle on the older games, as I actually have no idea what any of them are worth. These are all open for trades, too, I guess. Comment/PM me on my Backloggery or message me on AIM if you wish to haggle. As I said, I don’t know the value of… any of these, really, so let me know if anything is horribly overpriced.

Sega Genesis ($4 each, no boxes/manuals)

  • Bass Masters Classic
  • Caesar’s Palace
  • Madden NFL 95
  • NHL 96
  • RBI Baseball 4
  • Sonic Spinball

Super Nintendo Entertainment System ($5 each, no boxes/manuals)

  • Bill Laimbeer’s Combat Basketball
  • Bills VS Blazers and the NBA Playoffs
  • Donkey Kong Country (TRADING: Arcadios)
  • George Foreman’s KO Boxing
  • Mario’s Time Machine
  • NHL Stanley Cup
  • Paperboy 2
  • SeaQuest OSV
  • Super Mario World

Game Boy Advance ($6 each, no boxes/manuals)

  • Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku
  • MegaMan Battle Network 4: Red Sun
  • Midway’s Greatest Arcade Hits
  • Sonic Advance (RESERVED: PaperLink64)

Nintendo GameCube ($15, great condition, box/manual included)

  • Soul Calibur II

PlayStation 2 ($12 each, decent condition)

  • Ratchet & Clank (Includes A box, but not THE box. Sorry, I bought it used. No manual, either.)

Payments will most likely be, uh… Cash through an envelope. That’s how Sobou and I traded a while back, anyway. I have nowhere around here to cash money orders, and I don’t have a bank account, so… While you CAN pay me through Paypal, I can’t spent it outside the internet. Unless you’re getting, like, $30+ worth of stuff, I’d rather not use that option.

As far as shipping goes… I guess we’ll talk later. I’d like to pay for shipping myself, but I don’t have a dime right now, and depending on what you’re buying, if I subtract shipping out of the game purchase cost, I might actually LOSE money… So be aware of that. I might have to request a couple more dollars for shipping. I don’t want to, but like I said, I’m completely broke right now. That’s why I’m selling any of these in the first place.

4 weeks have passed pretty quickly, and I still haven’t written my Earthbound review. I’m pretty much still trying to figure out how to present my opinion on the game, so I’ll still need a bit of time to organize my thoughts. Anyways, this is pretty much just an “I’M ALIVE!” post. I haven’t got too much to say, though. Christmas break started, and I got the red ring of death. Not cool Microsoft, not cool. Anyways, I’ll be recieving a box tomorrow or the day after tomorrow to ship my 360 in. (I haven’t even used my damn 360 since summer!) On the other hand, I’ve been playing video games, as usual. Specifically, Chrono Trigger DS, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, Gears of War 2, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, so I guess I’ll talk about those in seperate blog posts. So let’s start with Chrono Trigger! Because nobody expects me being lazy!

CHRONO TRIGGER [DS]
I’m pretty sure everyone reading this blog has heard of, or has played Chrono Trigger, so I won’t go into too much detail. Basically, Chrono Trigger is the story of Crono and his friends, and their quest to travel through time to save the world. Despite the fairly cliche premise, Chrono Trigger delivers an amazing story at a steady pace, topped off with a whopping 13 endings. I haven’t beaten Chrono Trigger DS, and I don’t remember beating Chrono Trigger on the SNES, so I can’t really comment on the endings. The game plays just like how you’d expect an RPG to play. There are no random encounters; battles are triggered by the *touch to battle* kind of system. There are no battles on the world map because of this, meaning battles only occur in “dungeon” maps. Actual battles are your standard Final Fantasy-like flair. You have an ATB bar, you can attack, you can use techs, you can use items, and you can run. However, two things set this game apart. One thing is the top screen (assuming you’re playing in DS mode). The top screen is basically your battle screen. On that screen, you will see your party members attack. What’s important about this top screen is that there are attacks that damage a certain portion of the screen. For example, in the beginning of the game, Crono learns an attack called “Cyclone”. Cyclone is an attack that hits all the enemies around a certain enemy in a circle. If an enemy is out of range, you won’t be able to hit them. This adds another layer of strategy (until you get Dark Matter and Luminaire, that is…) because some enemies move a lot, and you want to hit them at the right time. There’s Active and Wait timing options for the ATB, but it’s the same as all the other Active and Wait options in every other game, so I won’t develop on that. On active, you’ll require a bit of timing with your skills, since enemies will be moving while you use your techs. Interesting. Another thing that’s worth mentioning is the dual/triple techs system. Each combination of party members presents you with different dual/triple techs. Basically, dual/triple techs are techs where you combine the techs of different party members? Make sense? Think of it this way; Marle has Ice spells, and Lucca has Fire spells. Combine the two of them together, and what do you get?

Crono, Lucca, and Marle prepare for a fight.

Crono, Lucca, and Marle prepare for a fight.

A fire/ice spell called “Antipode Bomb”. Antipode Bomb is a dual-tech. It’s knid of hard for me to describe, but you get the point, right? The music remains the same. Yasunori Mitsuda did a great job of it. I’m particularly fond of this specific tune; not sure why, but it’s my favorite song in the entire soundtrack. *shrugs* The new translation… I can’t really comment on that. I don’t remember the old translation well enough, since I didn’t really appreciate Chrono Trigger back in the day. I just noticed that Frog didn’t speak in his “olde english” anymore, which is good, since everyone else in his era spoke in plain, SIMPLE english. But hey, he’s still just as formal, so it doesn’t really detract from his personality. Anyways, as far as I’ve played, if you’re a fan of JRPGs, definitely get Chrono Trigger DS. Unless you’ve beaten the original 12321 times. If you have, just get it if you want to, I guess. The visuals are exactly the same, the soundtrack is exactly the same, and the gameplay is practically the same (although there are two new dungeons, an extras menu, and an arena. not sure if it justifies a purchase over the SNES version…) But if you haven’t played the original Chrono Trigger, you’re in for a treat! It’s got interesting characters and a touching plot riddled with twists and turns. Either way, it seems like a pretty short game, and 13 endings add to replayability of the game. Fun Toriyama art is always a plus too!

Anyways, I thought I’d write a lot on Chrono Trigger, and I did. Hopefully, I’ll be able to update some more over the winter break. I’m gonna go do something else, but have fun, and enjoy yourselves over the holidays, people! I know I will!

Dan #14 – New! December 21, 2008

Finally, my backlog is going to do some growing. I’ve pretty much been going one game at a time since I beat all of my Unfinished games back in October, but soon my backlog will see two Unfinished games, as well as one Null time sink.

First, Super Metroid. I’m borrowing this from my cousin (the same one who loaned me Super Mario RPG a while back, as well as any other game you’ve ever seen me say I’ve borrowed in recent months). I was just going to ROM it, but my controller is being wonky, and Super Metroid is one game I outright refuse to play with a keyboard.

I’m not the most die-hard Metroid fan around, but I’ve always been fond of the series. I didn’t hop on board until Fusion and Prime came out, but hey. I got to thinking not too long ago that I didn’t believe I ever beat Super Metroid. I mean, I never owned it, but I’d always kind of thought for some reason that it was something I’d beaten at some point. Not sure why.

I just started tonight, and I’ve already had my first death. It wasn’t to the first boss, but rather a generic enemy after the boss. I was at nearly full health, too. My ego suffered critical damage.

Then you’ve got Animal Crossing: City Folk, which my good buddy/waifu Arcadios is sending to me as a Christmas present. Like basically everyone else on The Backloggery, I’ll be keeping its status as Null, unless I actually do EVERYTHING in it someday, in which case I’ll mark it complete like I did the original AC.

Arcadios is also letting me borrow his copy of Gears of War, which is kind of historic. As famous as the 360 is for its SHOOTAN, I still have yet to play an FPS game on mine… or anyone’s, for that matter. Much obliged, Arc! You’ll get those sexual favors sooner than you think~

Finally, I want to take this opportunity to put in a shameless plug for Noi’s streams. Bored late at night? Noi’s far more nocturnal than Drum/Try, so stop by sometime! :)

This post wasn’t very long, so here, have some freaked-out cat.

Sousuke #9 – Home again, but not for long! [updated!] December 19, 2008

Well, back home again. Spent a couple [three?] days in the hospital, two of which were spent in emerge. The whole hospital situation in this city is getting quite ridiculous–I don’t know how they can even THINK about closing two of the three we have. In any case, I’m glad that I only spent a short time there this time around. I hate spending time in hospitals, let alone during the Christmas season.

Anyway, got home last night. Get to spend the weekend at home, and then have to finish my Christmas shopping Monday [assuming my cheque doesn't come in tonight as it SHOULD], then it’s off to Bracebridge/Muskoka for a week or so for the holidays. My grandmother [the woman my grandfather was married to, so not related by blood, but we're still very close] has had a rough year–my grandfather passed away this summer, and her mother just passed away this past week… And her daughter [another part of the family that we're VERY close with, even though we're not [i]technically[/i] related] lives down there, so we’re spending Christmas with them this year instead of all going to the grandparent’s place on Manitoulin. It’s a bit of a longer drive, but I’ve not been there in years [and they got a new house, too] so it should be nice. We’re supposed to be renting a nice new car on Monday or Tuesday to make the drive down.

As for gaming… Well, not much news, sadly. I’m looking to pick up Persona 4, but I still haven’t finished P3: FES, so I’m kind of wary. I might just wait a bit–but I also don’t want to miss it completely and not be able to find it later on, you know?

I also decided to pick up Super Mario Galaxy when I got my HDTV. I know I’m a little late to the boat on that one, but it was fun. I rented it a few times, but didn’t own it. I found it for a pretty cheap price, too. $10 off compared to everywhere else wasn’t too bad. On the XBL front, I grabbed a couple games for the hell of it: Banjo-Kazooie and Castle Crashers. I’ve heard good things about Crashers, but haven’t played it yet. I really should do that. B-K is awesome, simply put. I’m about halfway through it, as far as I can remember, and looking at my friend-list leaderboards, I seem to be at the top of every level’s board.

Goes to show you how much I used to play this game. Either that, or how much I retain when it comes to gaming. Heh. Either way, I love it. If you haven’t bought it yet, go buy it. It’s worth the 1200 MSP. Gotta love those Jinjos.

I have to say though, that it feels NOTHING like the Christmas season… except for the snow that’s been falling like crazy.

[Update!] Not much to say, except for finally a new Backlog theme for me. Enjoy!

Well this is just great. I was talking about this with Spectro the other night, but I might have carpal tunnel. T_T

This is gonna foil most of my gaming plans for my Winter Break, but oh well. It hurts too much to even think about it right now… It even hurts to type right now anyway. If anything, less beatmania IIDX 15: DJTROOPERS, more Persona 4. But even then, I’d think I’d continue to struggle to play games period. My right hand hurts that much.

Ugh, so I might not be able to make as many updates as I had anticipated. Plus, our blog hit a new low in daily views only nabbing 21 views yesterday. :(

C’mon, guys. I know you got something to say. Update already. :(

Gah, it hurts. Later~

This just describes my day perfectly. It just so happens to describe that week I got grounded as well. The outlook is bleak for me. I think I’ll be able to pass, but just not with a grade that will denote me to actually not have to take my Persuasive Writing class. Ugh… It’s just an odd semester… I guess this is where the reality of college starts to kick in. ;_;

It’s just one of those days…

Another Renard song. Artist alias used for this one is The Quick Brown Fox. This alias specializes in Speedcore. Bonus points to those who can identify who did the original version of this.

I’ll update this one a little more later… It’s off one of his albums and I just don’t have time for that right now.

Done with updates, like usual. See you next week~

Later~
