Ren #28 – Hot summer, WET BODIES. And an ocean of stars. July 31, 2009

Hay thar. My lazy ass is actually making a post. Oyay. But I always forget what I’m going to talk about.
I guess today I’ll do a review of Star Ocean: First Departure considering I beat it like.. yesterday.
Life outside the house has kept me quite satisfied and occupied. I’m spending time with my best friend on the phone and such and last Sunday I went to the beach. It was insanely hot and since I am too cheap and shy to buy and swear a swimsuit, I wore shorts, a 3OH!3 shirt, and knee-high striped socks, which are currently filled with sand. Oh well. I can’t swim, either. It was still fun as hell, though.
It seems people are also still discovering my true gender and identity. Again, I’m sorry. ‘Specially you, Chao.
Also, if you hadn’t noticed, there’s a new character to the DRE fighters. Kasu-chan. You’ll get to know more about her when she makes her first post!~
Oh lawl, the other day(well, more like a month ago), I had a huge impulse and decided to waste a shitload of cash on games. That purchase led me to these:
- Valkyria Chronicles (PS3)
- Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 (PS2)
- Sexy Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Wallet
- Street Fighter IV (PS3)
- Prince of Persia (PS3)
- Infinite Undiscovery (360)
- The Last Remnant (360)
I actually beat Prince of Persia a few weeks ago or so. It was easy, but I really, really enjoyed it. I want the Epilogue so badly, but I have to get a PSN card for that or something. ;__; Oh well, I’ll wait, I guess. I might go over to GameStop sometime next week and get a $20 card or something. I also want to get Flower for PSN because I heard it was sexy.
I have a “SUMMER START/PROGRESSION” list on my faglog, but I haven’t started nor progressed in any of them as of yet. I probably never will. MY BACKLOG IS ETERNALLY UNBEATEN. Laziness is my curse.
Anyway, currently I’ve been playing Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4. It’s enjoyable, so far. The shadow concept in this game kind of disappoints me. The dungeon flow seems much better than 3, though, which is fantastic. I’m enjoying it, but I haven’t really progressed much as of yet, I was too busy with Star Ocean.

Arc #011-The Filler Arc R2: IT FEELS SO GOOD! July 29, 2009

Fucking people up in No More Heroes is a joy in life I take pride in tasting. It’s the type of game where you want the game play to be repetitive because you can’t get enough of it.
And that’s what I’ve been mostly playing. I’m towards the end. All I need to do now is get enough money for the final entry fee and then I’m off to fight Rank 1. Right now I got the majority of Gold medals done both for regular jobs and assassin jobs ‘cept like 2 that are still on Silver. I got all the beam katanas and they’re all maximized, even the one part for Tsubaki Mk-III that cost me 999,999LB. (more…)
Noi hates on :: Achievements July 28, 2009

*Disclaimer – Any opinions in these categories are not the opinions of all the DRE: Insert Disc 2 crew. They only belong to moi, and as such, any hate should be directed only to sole person.
New category for new segment. While the main posts should technically be for “rants”, I’ll be using this category for more focused hate, though it’s entirely opinionated.
Now, to start this off, I like achievements. I like achievements done right. This however, is not the case for the majority of games that have them.
Are there games that shouldn’t have achivements? Yes, there should. It only makes it slightly awkward to have gone through some dramatic story arc that may or may not have ended up with a plot twist or character death, only to see the “Achievement Unlocked” box pop-up.
Now, achievements done right? Take Mega Man 9. There are only one or two achievements gained from just beating the game, while the rest are done through what really are “achievements”, such as the infamous Mr. Perfect run, taking down the robot masters as quickly as possible, or clearing a stage without using a weapon.
Now, type of achievements I dislike? Resident Evil 5. Don’t get me wrong now, RE5 is a great game and I rate it a full 4 stars, 5 stars, 10/10 or whatever rating system you go by. But I’m always less than impressed with “achievements” that are given just for beating the game. They aren’t so much achievements as much as they are progress markers. RE5 gives you an achievement for every chapter segment you clear, making for a total of 16 achievements gained for just beating the game, with a final one awarded depending on the difficulty the game was beaten on. There are also achivements for things that, odds are, you were going to do while playing anyway, such as getting 20 headshots, defeating X number of enemies with X weapon, or helping your partner in X situation.
Given the current gaming generation’s mindset, it’s a bit of a shame that “no achivements” can’t be enforced, since every new X360 or PS3 game is required to have them. Still, these are just ramblings of a retro gamer who wishes things were as simple as they were way back when, when “achievement” meant beating a Mega Man game without using a continue, rather than today’s “Beat the game on easy mode”.

While I love getting new games, it’s only when I get a huge bunch of games at once that I realize just how much dedication it takes to actually play through them, not counting ones I already own.
Turned 20 yesterday, yet not much has changed except for having beaten a whole bunch of games. Even that’s been overturned in a single day, what with now having a job, and splurging on my first paycheck on a visit to GameStop and Play ‘N’ Trade. Now that my birthday is done with, the list of things I’ve been gifted/bought for myself are.
- Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (Gifted by Blufin)
- Bionic Commando (PS3)
- Mirror’s Edge (PS3)
- Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
- Dead Space (PS3)
- 4000 Wii Points, Bought FF4: TAY tales, Cho Aniki
- 2000 PSN points, Bought FFVII
- Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete
- New PC Headset
- Brave Fencer Musashi (Gifted by Danstorce)
- Megaman 1 T-shirt
- BlazBlue 6B T-shirt
Yeah, I’ve only managed to beat like 3-4 games in the past month, and these gifts don’t help.
I had a much longer blog post but stupid firefox crashed and deleted everything asdfghjkl
So yeah, birthday. I showed off the Bit. Trip and My Life as a **** games, as well as Dead Space (we were scared and it was noon), Bionic Commando, and more stuff.
In the end, the highlight of the evening was playing Megaman 1 (fitting, since I was wearing the MM shirt I was gifted). We took turns, passing the controller once we either got a game over or cleared a stage. In the end though, I ended up beating every stage except for cutman, who was beaten before I got my turn. This lasted well into the night, and they ended up leaving around 1:30 AM.
So now I cut this post short with the single driving force behind playing MM1.

It’s spreading…faster than any virus and ten times as deadly. So…how many games did my Backlog grow since my last post? Let’s make a list, shall we?
1. Bit. Trip Beat for VC
2. Punch Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream for VC
3. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for VC
4. Super C for NES
5. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for PSP
6. Chrono Trigger for DS
7. No More Heroes for Wii
So…7 new games added within a week…and with that I become multiple steps closer to becoming a minion of
. But that’s not all. I’ve tried to protect myself from infection by progressing in defeating it as well. Baby steps. I took Final Fantasy VII’s
and turned it into a
. Took out Ruby and Emerald Weapon using a loop effect with Cloud. Was pretty easy since I did it once, came back in about 20 mins and they were beaten and then I moved onto beating Jenova Synthesis, Bizzaro and Safer Sephiroth. I also
Super Mario Bros. 2 for NES. I would’ve liked a
on it but I got up to World 4 and died multiple times and lost all my retries so I said fuck it and went for a
instead using Warp Pipes. (more…)

Eden of the East is an anime that ran from April 9th, 2009 to June 18th of the same year.
It was created, directed and written by Kenji Kamiyama who is most famous for his Ghost in a Shell series.
The studio that handled Eden was Production I.G. It has helped in developing many series and films. Too many to count but the majority of the people here know it for being the animators of the Tales series when it comes to in game cut scenes. (more…)
Mach #60 – The Otakon Report – Day 00 – “I’m normal… I’m normal… I’m normal…” July 17, 2009
Posted by Mach in Mach's Rants.1 comment so far
So I’m finally down here in Murrland at the “lovely” Inner Harbor for Otakon and god dammit is it hot down here. Makes Jersey look really tame in comparison.
Anyway, we left my friend’s place around noon and got here at about 3ish. Somewhat lucky for us that we actually got upgraded to a suite instead of just getting a normal room, so that was a nice plus. We could actually save a fortune on food because we actually lucked out getting a fridge and a microwave in our room. So $1.19 Easy Mac for the win!
So what’s new with me? Being here at this convention actually makes me feel normal, hence the title and such. Honestly though, it was WAY too fucking hot today to be wearing heavy and dark costumes today. Not a lovely combination by any chance. Plus, the con hasn’t even officially started anyway, so why the fuck would you waste your costume today? Such a waste.
So the pre-reg line took about two hours… Sucked for one of my friends though since we waited in line that long, only for him to realize that he forgot his ID in his car. So he actually had to go back later that night to get his badge WITH his ID in hand. As far as unfortunate luck is going, the air conditioners in our room have been acting pretty shitty. It’s BURNING in this damn room. I don’t think I could actually stand much more of it at the moment. Both control panels have the ACs at 68, but I haven’t felt a god damn difference all day. FML.
I guess this con is a bit daunting for me since it’s my first time attending it. I’ve been hearing from everyone that you wait in line EVERYWHERE just to wait in line somewhere else, and on top of all that, the con is huge. I suppose I’m excited for it, but I guess I’ll have to do a bit of exploring first and get myself familiar with the convention center. I’m pretty excited though. I hope to find some good stuff in the Dealer’s Room which is probably one of the first spots I’m hitting when I get to the convention center later in the morning. I NEED SOME NEW SHIRTS ANYWAY. Hopefully limiting myself to 40 dollars on Day 1.
So what else? I’ll be meeting up with Kasumi, Ashe, and hopefully Kari at the con as well. All of them, hopefully on Saturday, Kasumi, maybe earlier. If anything I’m certain we’re doing that Saturday is that Tales of Panel. Why?
1. Kasumi actually wanted to go to that one. I have no objections since that’s actually the panel I met her at when I first met her at Katsucon.
2. One of my friends I went to college with is actually ON the panel. Since I haven’t seen her in ages, I’ll be dropping by to say hello and stuff.
Exciting, exciting stuff. I’ll probably be doing the DDR tournament as well tomorrow. Dunno if I’m gonna just do the Standard tournament or just suck it up and do the Heavy tournament. Whatever.
Enough ranting for me tonight. I’ll have more an update after Day 01.
Until then, later~

Arc #009-The Filler Arc R2: Now Hiring: Backloggers July 15, 2009
Posted by Arc in Arc's Rants.10 comments
I’ll go /v/ on this post first.
Let me speak on my recent experience with a wonderful game that has brought me joy, happiness, anger and despair. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. A game with enough grace to make any man, woman and child into a Zelda fan. Well me….this game experience has been one giant beautiful and ugly struggle that has taken hold of me with the grip of death. I have failed twice to finish this game due to incidents beyond my control.
My first experience was when I emulated it on my computer but then I suddenly caught a virus when I was descending toward Great Bay. I had to flush my computer out to it’s default everything and my game data was erased with everything else.
A couple of months ago I bought Majora’s Mask for the N64 thinking it would be my safest course of action to insure a wholesome and problem free gaming experience with this magnum opus but alas. When I finally get to playing it all it shattered when it continuously froze on me whenever I played The Song of Time which many of the people that have played it should know that it is the song that allows you to permanently save any progress you’ve done and save any item of importance while the regainables like rupees, bombs and arrows are lost.
I have made attempts to save it. I thought I had done it. I thought I was finally able to continually play Majora’s Mask without any problems but fate is a cruel vixen. With a slap across my face, the game froze on my once again as I was unfreezing the old Goron in the frozen lake that lead to the Goron Village. That broke my will right there and then. Why now? Why this specific game to ruin for me? Why me? Well fuck it. Not gonna let this get me down. I will stop at nothing. I will
Majora’s Mask…eventually.

My face when Majora's Mask fucked up.
Noi #13 – KyoAni can go suck egg. July 13, 2009

…..
Haruhi S2 Episode 5. Really KyoAni? Really? I think my previous rant was enough on the subject, but at least this episode SEEMED to hint at an episode 6 conslusion. Maybe. I hope.
Ooooon to a brighter subject through. Or maybe, not so bright really. The packages I was expecting haven’t arrived yet. Only one did, which was Resistance: Fall of Man, and I already went and beat the game. I haven’t really been in a gaming mood, outside of playing Street Fighter IV to fulfill my fighting game craving while BlazBlue gets here. Unlocking trophies here and there, though it’s just meant to keep me busy while more games arrive. I could be beating the games I already own, but eh, I simply don’t feel in the mood for them right now.
Huh, rather short post. Here, have some Nanairo medley. Nico link for those of you who’d rather see it in one video.

Mach #59 – What’s the point? July 11, 2009
Posted by Mach in Mach's Rants.11 comments
This is just fucking lovely, the sound card on my laptop just fucking died on me and now my computer is quite mute right now. Really sucks, but hopefully I could fix this up tomorrow and stuff… Otherwise, Mach needs to save up for a new laptop. One that actually fucking works.
Anyway, time for an actual gaming rant on my part, something that’s been pissing me off as of lately as well. Probably because this seems to be a trend in EVERY FUCKING ARCADE I GO TO. Except the one that I work at because my boss is a little to cheap for that… But as you might recall, I did a hands-on review of Guitar Hero Arcade back in January. It left an extremely sour impression in my mouth and to this day, it’s still extremely bitter and there’s almost nothing that would change my mind to even think this is a remotely good game.
So what am I bitching about? Why the fuck do we need Guitar Hero Arcade to begin with? Essentially, on paper, it looks like Guitar Hero 3, plays like Guitar Hero 3, and half the world already owns Guitar Hero 3. Why do we feel the need to spend ONE dollar on ONE song on a game we probably already have at home?
As mentioned in my hands-on review and still holds true today, the game is just Guitar Hero 3 with a shorter songlist and another reason to stab someone in the neck for choosing Through the Fire and the Flames. Why? You actually paid a dollar to play a song you probably can’t pass on the heavy, lunky ass guitar that the game provides. Also, why the fuck would you want to listen to Dragonforce? All their stuff sounds the same.
But I have a deeper reason for this rant. This piece of crap arcade game overshadows games that deserve to be put into the spotlight instead of being a shitty cash-in for something that already exists. Here in Jersey, we got Six Flags: Great Adventure. A friend of mine works at the arcade there and told me about a DJMAX Technika machine that was being put on Location Test there to see if there was any generated interest in the game. As of today, the Technika machine is no longer there.
Why?
It was put next to Guitar Hero Arcade machine. According to my friend who worked there, the Guitar Hero Arcade machine made about $1,000 in ONE week. As for the Technika machine, probably about $90. It’s a realy tragic because such an amazing arcade game is being overshadowed by this cash-in by Konami and Activision.
It’s a real pity that the arcade scene seems to be dying out over here in the US. Instead of getting amazing, new innovative games that challenge the everyday gamer, we get crappy arcade ports of shit we’ve already spend about $80 to get. It makes me angry because they chose a particularly bad version of Guitar Hero to port to the arcades. I wasn’t amazed by the songlist in Guitar Hero 3 either.
So again, I ask, what’’s the point of Guitar Hero arcade? You play a four minute song to get your name on a list that no one is really gonna care about. Do you attempt to make up for the lack of a whammy bar and just grab your penis and wham that off and hope you get star power overflowing out of you? Seriously, the only time I’ve ever played Guitar Hero Arcade was back in January.
I’ll probably keep it at that and not support this piece of crap game. I’ll invest my money is something that’s more worth my time.
Until then, later~
