A Review and a Smoke #1: Prototype June 15, 2009

So, I decided I had to review this game. I have way too much to say about it to keep all to myself. First off, I didn’t buy it. I’m slightly glad I didn’t because I don’t think it has a lot of replay value. Anyway, yeah.. I burned the game. :)

You start off in a chaotic New York City (a game that takes place in New York? Woah, originality. You’ll immediately notice the sandbox environment, overly badass anti-hero, and uh.. chaos. Well, it’s one of those “oh, here try all the superpowers and then we can take them away because the entire game is a flashback” game. You’re constantly trying to catch up to the present, which you’ll see cutscenes of as you progress through the story. Speaking of story, let me just say this now: This story is stupid. It’s like Resident Evil meets Metal Gear Solid meets Devil May Cry meets Xbox 360’s hidden gem “The Darkness”. At the end of the game, the main character was screaming at some guy I was chasing to kill, and I had no idea who he was. Probably because the story was so gimmicky, unoriginal, and boring. You need to keep reading, though. This game has some great redeeming qualities.

You’re basically a man who turns into these black noodle-y looking things and you eat people. Yep.  You can run around extremely fast, run up walls, glide around the city, throw cars at people, have your arms turn into crazy weapons, and eat people. You “consume” them. When you consume somebody, you basically make them a part of yourself. It doesn’t really make sense because all you get is their memories and their looks as a disguise (until you eat someone else, which replaces the previous disguise), but that’s what the game tells me.

The gameplay is pretty great. AI is stupid, and some physics are just plain terrible, but the different powers you have at your disposal make this game shine. It seems like overall, it could of used a lot more polish and a better engine. Although some powers and upgrades seem useless and/or I never bothered to use them, the combat is awesome. It’s not a very easy game. The farther you get, the more they throw harder and harder types of enemies at you.

I’m not really good with reviews, so I won’t make it too long. I’ll just say that this game is great and recommended. I hope you enjoyed my review. I’d like some criticism on my writing/reviewing skills (or lack-thereof).

I’d also like to take this chance to say goodbye for a while. I’m going to officially be on hiatus. I’ve got some things to take care of before I dedicate myself to anything for a while. I’d like to post regularly sometime this summer. Add me on aim, xfire, or whatever and let’s have a chat sometime.

I really need to vent. You ever have a good day and then at the end of the day some kind of bomb was dropped on you? Yeah, that’s what happened to me today. I received a text a hour or two ago and it totally ruined my mood. It’s not like someone died, though. It’s ridiculously simplistic. I don’t really want to go into details. Although it is simple, it’s still personal. I also feel out of place complaining about it here. Derkomach said I can talk about real life stuff on here, but it’s still a gaming blog, and not my blog to whine on. I guess I’m just really lonely and wish I had someone to talk to right now. Y’know.. I think I should start a journal. In fact, I created a livejournal account a while back and never used it. I’m going to use it now. It’s not going to be a blog, it’s going to be my own personal journal. I seriously do need somewhere to write down my thoughts.

Maybe I should talk just a little bit about gaming, hmm? I’ve gotten really far in Persona 3 FES. Half way through, perhaps? A little more, even.. I think. I’m in October, I believe. I’m pissed about a certain character’s death. That’s not a spoiler, is it? I mean, someone dies in every game. :P Now, I really liked this character. It’s also this other character’s fault, I believe. I no longer want to use said character in combat just because I hate their guts. >:(

Somehow, my PS3 managed to delete all my PS2 saved games. I think I did it accidently when I was messing around with the save manager thing when I wanted to save Persona 3. I guess I didn’t have that much PS2 data, though. I had almost beaten God of War II and I played a bit of Katamari Damacy.. but other than that, nah. I’m not too upset about that. I just won’t mess with that manager anymore. It’s weird, though. I created a second virtual PS2 memory card, and it read as 7000/7000 KB (or something like that. Might even be MB). I don’t know… I’m rambling.

My friend is building me a new PC. This one is just.. trash. I  can barely run WoW anymore. I payed for the parts and it was barely over $500. It’s going to be a beast, too. Crysis, here I come. Since this PC is going to get shafted until I feel like messing with it again, I decided to reformat my hard drive and install Ubuntu on it. I’ve always wanted to try Linux out, but I guess I always thought it would be too difficult. Well.. let me say that Ubuntu is hands down the best OS I’ve ever used. It has one MAJOR flaw, though. It can’t run Windows games! Being a gamer, this is basically a deal breaker for me. I was going to start using Ubuntu instead of Windows, but I’d have to run all my games through a program called Wine, which is basically a Windows emulator. As you know with emulators: they don’t always work correctly! I guess I’m considering dual-booting my new PC with Windows XP and Ubuntu. I’ll mess around with Ubuntu on here some more before I decide, though, even though I’m really liking it.

I know this post is long. I know this post is boring. I enjoy writing, but let’s face it: I am a shitty writer. This would explain why my posts (even if they are extremely rare!) get a very low amount of views and comments. Sorry if I took the spotlight from Arcadios. Wait, why the hell is he here anyway? lol. Also, sorry if the grammar, formatting, or just this post in general sucks. Maybe I should just stick to private livejournal from now on. No one reads this shit, anyway. /emo

Yeah, I’m alive. At the beginning of March I got back into World of Warcrack, so.. yeah. That’s why I’ve been gone. :D Does anyone else play? I know it’s a pain in the ass to come to a different server once you’ve gotten comfortable with your current character, and it costs $25 to move the damn thing, but if you’re lonely and all by yourself I’m on Mannoroth. I’m leveling a few different characters at once, but my main is Spectro. He’s a midget mage. >:D Give me a shout on my backlog or send me an IM on any of the messengers I use if you want to play with me. I usually forget to check the comments here.
I was also telling Derkomach that I got my 360 softmodded, so I’ve been playing a lot of burned games. Anyone got any suggestions for games I should download? Also, I’ve been debating whether or not to add my burned games to my backlog with the little “Other” symbol. I may end up doing it just so I can keep track of what I’m playing. It’s nice to be able to save some money. Now maybe I can buy some more Final Fantasy games for Noi’s marathon that I’ve been waiting months for.

I wanted to touch on something. Take a look at this if haven’t already: [link]

Done reading? Okay, WTF CAPCOM. I know this is a rumor, but I knew that other publishers had done this before. Kotaku provides a link to an article from 2006 where some older 360 games used unlock keys that you had to pay for to unlock content already on the disc you’ve already purchased. This disgusts me. This disgusts me even more than buying levels and shit on Vesperia. I don’t know what else to say about this.. I mean I’d love to boycott the Versus DLC, but I want to kill some friends as Wesker. :(

I apologize if this is poorly formatted and/or has bad grammar. It’s been a while since I actually tried to write something. Hell, my last blog was what? Beginning of February?

P.S. Someone remind me to attend Noi’s stream. There’s one on Saturday right?

Now that Dan has defected to the dark side, I clearly need to post more. I have an excuse for lack of posts, though. There is seriously nothing going on in my life let a lone gaming. Get up, go to school. Go home, watch tv while eating. Check Backloggery, pass out. If I squeeze any gaming in there I am lucky.  It’s pretty much the same routine every single day,  and unless I post a summary for each episode of 24 I watch, then I’m not going to have much to say. I’ll try my best, though. :)

It’s funny. The most gaming I’ve actually done is in school. I usually just get what I can finished and pull out my DS and start playing. I’m on the final case of Phoenix Wright 2. I don’t know why Mach doesn’t like circus case. I loved it. :D I finished that case and I’m on the final one. What’s going to happen with Edgey? :(

I started Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for GBA as well. I played quite a bit today (yesterday, since it’s 2AM) in school. I can’t believe I never finished this game when I owned it before. It’s nearly as good as the Paper Mario games.

I know my posts are short and leave much to be desired, so I’ll throw this in here:
You may have heard Careless Whisper by Wham!/George Michael before. It’s a very popular, very cheesy ’80s song that is probably used as background music for hundreds of porn videos. Well, one of my favorite bands covered the song recently. Take a look:

I couldn’t think of a better title.

First and foremost, I know haven’t exactly been active. I’ve been getting a lot of complaints, so I realize it’s time to post. I hope I can be more active in the future, but it’s not like I haven’t said that before.

There’s been a lot going on in my life so I’ve been watching a lot of episodes of The Sopranos and 24 and relaxing rather then playing games. Lately I’m just too stressed to do anything that takes too much effort. If you didn’t know already, I’m a total TV show junkie. Everything from Lost to Smallville, I watch it. I love me some tv shows. ^_-

I mentioned that I’m not gaming a whole lot lately. I honestly can’t recall the last console game I played. It’s that bad. I think the last game I played must have been Left 4 Dead. That’s really all I’ve been playing; only because I can just jump online at any time.

I have been playing my DS though. I’ve finished the first case in Phoenix Wright 2 to warm up. I skipped the second case because I didn’t really like it the first time I played through it, and when I lost this game and my DS, I was on case 3 anyway. I’m near the beginning of case 3, and I’m having fun. PW2 is not a bad game! I think it’s just as good as the first game.

Well, I’m gonna wrap this up. I know it’s sort of short but I don’t really have anything else to say. I’m going to go back to watching Try4ce fight his way through Comix Zone.

Hello thar. Let me start out by saying: WELCOME TO TEH DRE, NOI. :D Yeah, by next month he’ll already have more entries than me. This is probably going to be a short entry. Not a lot going on.

I played Persona 3 for several hours today. I’m finally getting into it. It’s definitely taking a lot longer than P4 for the actual story to start up, though. I’m enjoying every minute of this game so far.

As far as the DS goes, I’m nearly there. I think I need $7 for the actual DS Lite then I’ll probably see if I can scrounge up some extra cash for a game to start out with.  Still not 100% sure what that will be yet.

Uhm, I was playing Zelda II a few days ago. It’s a really fun game. I hated it as a kid, too. I’m glad I got my NES working though. I can start working on beating those games and I plan on buying some new ones as well, namely Final Fantasy.

Well, this entry is lame. My next one will be better. I’ll stick a video at the bottom. It’s the easy way out. :D

Spectro #5 – My backlog suffers.. December 31, 2008

Yes, it’s been a while since I posted.. again. I’ve had quite a few different things to rant about over the last couple of weeks but I’ve never felt like posting. It’s the last day of ‘08 so I might as well post now. Hopefully you’ll see more from me in 2009.

The biggest thing going on in my gaming life right now is me saving up for a DS. I mentioned in an earlier blog that I lost my DS Lite near the beginning of 2008. I don’t know if it’s in my house or someone stole it from me; I’m willing to bet the latter. Anyway, you can check on my backlog to see how many more monies I need until I can buy a new DS. I’m leaning towards a shiny new onyx colored one. ^_-

Thanks to the fine members of the Backloggery, I have plenty of DS game suggestions to start out with.

Well.. I still haven’t dodged 200 lightning bolts in Final Fantasy X. I’ll get it eventually, though. Damn you,  Square!  My friend really wants me to play Disgaea but I haven’t finished Makai Kingdom yet. One strategy-RPG at a time! Speaking of RPGs.. over the past couple of weeks I have bought Persona 4 off of a friend, started it, received Persona 3 FES in the mail, and been convinced to play FES first instead. I’ll be starting FES soon. I can’t wait.

I also need to start Prince of Persia. Yeah, the new one that they didn’t bother giving a subtitle. That pisses me off when they use an old name and pretend the old game didn’t ever exist. I also just got Animal Crossing: City Folk. Hopefully some of you can visit my town sometime.

Here’s my biggest rant of the evening: My sister is a little ungrateful bitch. She’s never liked video games nearly as much as me, but some of them seem to catch her eye. Lately, it’s been Persona 3 and 4. While I’ve spent 0 hours in Persona 3 and 1-2 in Persona 4, she’s spent at least 20 hours in each game so far. But they are my games, so why do I let her do this? I’m nice. The only gaming I’ve done all week so far is about 2 hours on Left 4 Dead versus mode. All the rest of it has been spent at my computer or sleeping extra because I’m nice enough to let my sister have her fun for a while. Here is why I am pissed. After several days almost no gaming, I want to play my new copy of Prince of Persia. Is that too much to ask? Yes, apparently. She thinks she needs to make up the time that I have been gaming my whole entire life.  I don’t care what she says. It’s fucking game time. [/rant]

I hope that made since. I don’t type very well when I’m this flustered and pissed off.

Well, that’s it. I don’t have a whole lot else to say right now. I’ll seeya around.

Spectro #4 – Two Weeks, huh? December 14, 2008

judith5.jpg image by insertdisc2Sorry, I guess it’s been two weeks. Time has really been flying, and that’s a good thing. The closer I am to Christmas Break, the better. I really don’t know what has been going on with me. I’ll try harder to post more, I guess. >_>

I was kind of hoping to make MOTW on Backloggery this week. Oh, well. There’s always next week. I’m going to wait until January to change my theme. That’ll be a little over a month that I have had the DMC theme, I think. Maybe I’ll get MOTW by then?

I found something I was looking for. Too bad it wasn’t my DS. It was my NES, though. I actually have two, and they were together, so I found them both. One is a top loader, but only works with a RF switch. The other one is the original toaster-style NES. I really didn’t want to use the top loader and that stupid RF switch, so I tried out the other NES. It’s power light blinks simultaneously with the TV screen when I turn it on. I happened to be talking to Dan, so I asked him about it and he said I should keep blowing in the game and NES. I did it until I ran out of breath and decided to Google the blinking light. Google isn’t always as helpful as everyone says it is. The most mentioned problem was a corroded connector pin. I ordered a new one on Amazon, but it’s not arriving for about another week. I really want to play Zelda II, too. I also want to get some new NES games like Final Fantasy and some others.

I got Left 4 Dead this weekend. It arrived in the mail. It’s totally awesome. Mach needs to play with me. :( I also bought The Last Remnant for $25 on Overstock.com and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts on Amazon for around $25 as well. There are some really good deals on games lately! I visit CheapAssGamer.com quite often. I’m far from a cheap ass gamer, but I’m always short on money! Hehe.. Go check out the site. I don’t participate in the forums or anything, but the deals they report are pretty nice.
Anyway, I don’t have much more to say. I’ll try to remember to make another post in a few days. Seeya around. :)

Spectro #3 – I’m Lazy December 1, 2008

I have been meaning to post all week but I’ve been really lazy. I haven’t even felt like gaming much lately. I don’t know why. I pretty much wasted my whole Sunday sitting around. At least I got to see the live stream on the Backloggery. That was fun. Mischief Makers and Megaman. I plan to get a Megaman collection eventually so I can see what all the fuss is about. I’ve played them before, but not much. Mischief Makers looked pretty cool, too. I’m going to be wasting today sitting around, too. I’m staying home from school because.. well.. a combination of I don’t feel like going and I actually feel sick. Oh, hey! Go check out my backlog. Rebel was kind enough to make me a banner. I put together a theme, and there it it is. I love it. :D

I went to see Rise Against live in Detroit last week. They are a melodic hardcore band from Chicago.Rise Against's Tim McIllrath They were awesome. The opening bands were pretty good as well. I was on the main floor, and there was some moshing, so I stayed off to the side. I don’t feel like getting knocked out while I’m trying to have a good time. :/

My legs were sore for days from standing up from 6:30 to around 12:00. I love concerts, but as you may know, I don’t like being around a lot of people I don’t know. It’s pretty awkward for me, but I get by. If you want to hear what Rise Against sounds like, click here. If you have a music taste like Dan or Mach, you probably won’t like it. I chose one of their slower songs, anyway.

Like I said, I haven’t been playing much in the last few days. First Mirror’s Edge impressions are good, while Sonic Unleashed impressions are rather bad. I’m determined to start playing Brawl again. I need to get better. It’s too good of a game to not play, anyway. I also started Tales of Symphonia. I borrowed it from a friend. I don’t really plan on playing that much, yet.

I’ll probably make another post soon. I plan to start gaming a lot more often. I am going to have to make up some school, though.

Hulo thar. It’s me again. Well, now I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to everyone on Disc Read Error except Sousuke (aka the bastard who stole Raven). Apparently, he’s a rare sight these days. If you read his latest post, you would know that he’s been in the hospital. He’s out now, though, and although I do not know him personally, I wish him a speedy recovery. Speaking of latest posts, go read Dan’s review of Tales of Vesperia (if you haven’t already).

Now, onto the games. I’ve been mostly playing Final Fantasy X. I mentioned before how much I love this game. I conquered arguably the hardest boss in the game on Sunday and that marks the beginning of the sidequests. I’m going to start with the ultimate weapons, but there are several minigames that are annoying. For one, you have to dodge lightning two-hundred times. Yes, you heard me right. You have to wait for a little flash on the screen and hit X when you see it to dodge lightning — two-hundred times. It’s not so much hard as it is time consuming and tedious.

Damn those chocobos..

This other minigame was really pissing me off the other night. You have to finish a chocobo race in 0 minutes and 0 seconds. You might say that is impossible, but I’d tell you it’s only close to it. You see there are these balloons scattered throughout the “race track”. Each balloon you grab subtracts three seconds from the clock. That sounds easy, right? Wrong. I haven’t told you about the annoying chocobo trainer that steals your balloons or the heat-seeking birds. Yeah, you’re not the only one on the track. There’s this annoying lady that goes around pushing you out of the way and stealing your balloons while these freakin’ pidgeon-like birds fly and smack your chocobo in the face. Every bird you hit stuns you for about two seconds and automatically adds three seconds to the clock. Now, years ago, I beat this minigame. This time around I’m having a lot of trouble. I guess I’ll just have to keep practicing.

(

I never beat this game and two more in the series have come out since. :(

I was telling Len last night about my DS. I lost it earlier this year. I’ve decided that I want another though, so I’m going to save up and hopefully I’ll get one shortly after Christmas. I need some suggestions for games to get, though. I plan on buying the entire Phoenix Wright/Apollo Justice series minus the first one. That was the only one I completed, but I loved it. I also plan on buying The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass as that game was a amazing and I never beat that one either. What else should I plan on getting? :o

Anyway, this will be the last time my posts are so close together. They will be close to a week apart from now on. It’s just that I had things to rant about and I needed to get it out of my system.

Currently, Len is sick. So feel better, or else.
